On every eBird checklist birders are asked a simple question: “Are you submitting a complete checklist of the birds you saw/heard?” Though simple in concept, the power of reporting all species should not be underestimated. Sometimes it seems like there are not many mysteries remaining to be solved about birds that breed in North America. However, Hudsonian Godwits still represent a true mystery: we do not know how they migrate between their breeding grounds in northern Canada and Alaska and their wintering areas in extreme southern South America. Between their staging areas in southern Alaska and Canada and northern Argentina, godwits largely go unnoticed or unobserved each fall. Do most of them make the trip in one big jump? Is there some stopover site hidden away in some part of remote South America that we don’t know about? And how do they return north each year? Do they all meet up and travel together through the central part of North America? How often do they stop once they reach North America? With the help of eBirders across the western hemisphere we might just solve the mystery!

These birds are a critically endangered species, and part of the reintroduced population to the Bitter Creek National Wildlife Refuge located nearby in Kern County, California. The Cornell Lab of Ornithology is excited
to host The Cornell Lab Young Birders Event, which will be held August
6-9, 2009 in Ithaca, New York. The Young Birders Event aims
to bring together teenagers with a passion for birds who are interested
in pursing a career with birds. The young birders will meet people who have
successful careers that involve birds in a variety of ways from ornithological
researchers to tour leaders, to audio specialists and computer scientists. High school aged young birders are invited to fill out our application
form and return it for review by May 10th 2009. Ten
